Salmon River “River of No Return”

Free flowing through the second deepest gorge in North America (even deeper than the Grand Canyon), Idaho’s 450 miles of Salmon River accesses the most pristine and untouched terrain in the US. The Salmon River slices through unspoiled solitude of a 2.3 million acre Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area, unlike any other!

The Perfect Vacation!

The Main Stem of the Salmon River is famous for large, clean sandy beaches for camping and river games. The Salmon River also has warmer water than most rivers in the northwest and is great for swimming (76+ degrees during the summer), cutthroat trout, bass and sturgeon fishing. Best of all the Salmon River has extremely fun whitewater, and the best hot spring in the Pacific Northwest.
Unlike any other river the Salmon River displays all these characteristics plus it has recently become famous as the best stand up paddleboard (SUP) river trip in the world for its warm water and fun and safe wave-train rapids and no mosquitos! Honestly!

Salmon River History

Often called the “River of No Return”, the Salmon River is full of historic miner and homestead cabins, along with “Sheepeater”, Shoshone, Bannock and Nez Pierce Indian tribe’s pictographs and pit houses. The early river runners called the Salmon River the “River of No Return” because the wooden scows run in the early 20th century were scrapped at the end of their journey and used to build many of the cabins and outhouses in the lower canyon. But the truth be told the Salmon is in fact a river you’ll want to return to time and time again, and not want to return home at the end of your adventure.

Itinerary – 5-Day / 4-Night Salmon River Wilderness Trip

2017 Trip Dates – June 23-27, July 1-5, 9-13, 17-21, 25-29

Pre-Trip, Welcome to Salmon, Idaho, known for its friendly and warm western hospitality!

Please arrive in Salmon, Idaho the night before the trip begins. Salmon is a 5-hour drive (1 hour flight) from Boise and a 3-hour drive from Missoula. We have a pre-trip orientation at Idaho Adventures’ headquarters, conveniently located next to both the Stagecoach Inn (208.756.2919), and the Salmon River (Super 8) Motel (208.756.8880) at 7:00pm the evening before the trip begins. We will get acquainted, answer any last minute questions, and have a short orientation to show you how to pack the waterproof gear bags which we provide for your personal gear.
Pre-Trip Lodging in Salmon is arranged on your own, but we are here to help!

DAY 1, Plunging back in time!

We meet at Idaho Adventures’ Headquarters at 7:30am to load your gear and park your vehicle at our office. Free parking is provided. We then depart for a 2-hour van or bus ride to the Corn Creek, the put-in. We may stop after 25 minutes to get any last minute items (fishing licenses, beer, sunscreen etc.) at the North Fork Store. Upon launching our rafts at Corn Creek we begin our 82 mile river journey into the pristine Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. We will encounter Killum, Gun Barrel and Alder rapids today, which are all fun class III wave trains. This river calls to adventure seekers, who can choose between the paddle raft, inflatable kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. Or you can lounge comfortably on our oar rafts and enjoy the beautiful scenery and river history shared by your professional guide. The fishing is excellent for novice and experienced anglers alike. The warm air and water temperatures encourage frequent refreshing dips in the river and we often find guests in calm sections floating next to the rafts. Evenings are filled with river folklore, beach games, fishing, Dutch oven and fireside river cuisine, and star gazing.

Days 2 – 4, River time!

Each day brings new discoveries: exciting rapids like Black Creek, Bailey, 5 Mile, Split Rock, Big Mallard, Elkhorn and Growler rapids, historical sites such as Buckskin Bill’s homestead and Jim Moore’s place (maybe you’ll find the fortune he buried in the hillside!), and the much anticipated Barth Hot Springs. Visit Barth Hot Springs, known as the best hot spring in the Pacific Northwest.
We often stop and visit with several of our friends living off the grid in the river canyon along with stops to tour old historic homesteads. Some of our longtime friends that we may visit include Sue and Greg Metz at Yellow Pine homestead, Doug and Phyllis Tims at the Campbell’s Ferry homestead, and our wild friends Heinz and Barbara at Five Mile Bar. Historic homesteads include; one of the river’s most famous resident “Buckskin Bill”, the incredibly hard working entrepreneur Jim Moore and the colorful and much adored Poly Bemis. There are abundant hiking and fishing options including a hike to view a rare 2,000 year old Yew trees, also called the immortal tree, with its’ exposed scaring from past Native Americans who removed wood strips in order to construct their longbows.

DAY 5, Farewells until we float again!

We float for 5-14 miles this morning and run challenging rapids like Chittam and Vinegar Creek and arrive at the take-out at Carey Creek around 11:30 am, where we will have a nice lunch and you will say farewell to your beloved guides. Your post trip logistics will all be pre-arranged with our professional staff at Idaho Adventures. See trip planning information for more details.

Weather

What is the weather and water like?
The Salmon River Canyon is normally arid and warm from late May to late September with average daytime temperatures ranging from the 70’s to 90’s. Nighttime temperatures are cooler but comfortable, from the low 50’s to high 60’s. Summer water temperatures range from the 60’s to 70’s, perfect for rafting and swimming. May or early June is when river levels generally peak, but the Salmon is fed by enough tributaries to maintain a robust flow of water all summer long – even in low water years.
